Quercus bicolor
COMMON NAME: Swamp White Oak
FAMILY: Beech Family; Fagaceae
FOLIAGE: Simple, alternate, deciduous, 4 - 9 in. long, 2 - 4 in. wide. shape variable. Either unlobed, with large, rounded or bluntly pointed teeth, or which a few shallow, irregular, bluntly pointed or rounded. lobes. leaf gradually narrows to wedge-shaped or rounded base. Dark green above, paler below with felt-like pubescence.
BUDS: Blunt, with fine capillary scales often present in the terminal bud cluster.
BARK: Furrowed, with scaly ridges. Scales sometimes curl back.
FRUIT: Acorn, maturing in one year. 1/4 to 1 1/4 in. long , on a long stalk, from 1 -4 in. in length. Enclosed for abut one-third of its length in a thick, scaly, slightly fringed cup.
NATURAL HISTORY: Prefers moist soil.
NATIVE HABITAT: Quebec to Minnesota; south to North Carolina and Arkansas
