COMMON NAME: Common or European Linden

FAMILY: Tiliaceae

GROWTH HABIT: Upright0oval to pyramidal-rounded and densely branched in old age.

FOLIAGE: Alternate, simple, broad-ovate, 2 - 4 in long, about as wide, short-acuminate, obliquely cordate or nearly truncate, sharply toothed. Dark green and smooth above, bright green beneath. Petioles 1 - 2 in long.

BUDS: Intensely red-maroon,

BARK: Gray-brown, ridged and furrowed on older trunks.

FLOWERS: Floral bract 3 - 4 1/2 in long, 1/2 to 7/8 in wide.

FRUIT: Hairly, hard-shelled, faintly 5-ribbed.
